Johnny Goodwin Jr., is a Philadelphia based designer, graduate of the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator and determined to make a difference. Johnny saw a gap in the market for attractive sleek and sexy underwear for men with disabilities. Where trends evolve swiftly and styles come and go, Johnny Goodwin Jr. is a trailblazer not just for his creativity but for his commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.
He is a visionary entrepreneur and the founder of Easy Access Underwear: Adaptive Undies, whose mission is to empower individuals with disabilities through stylish and functional underwear.
Johnny leads this project with empathy and integrity. He reached out to Philadelphia based doctors to learn more about the underserved community of men needing adaptive wear and how a product like this could enhance their daily lives. From their feedback, he learned that men are getting cancer at a younger age than ever before, causing them to have an increase in post-cancer ailments like urinary frequency, urinary incontinence and in some cases dexterity issues. Veterans are also facing dexterity and urinary issues from cancer and other ailments as a result of their time served. After doing a deeper dive into the world of individuals with dexterity, urinary issues and a combination of both Johnny realized that the need for his Adaptive Undies was bigger than he originally thought.
Here are a few of the statistics. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reports that approximately 4.4 million veterans have a service-connected disability, with mobility impairments being one of the most common types of disabilities among veterans.
Nearly 90,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease annually in the United States. This represents a 50% increase from the previously estimated 60,000 diagnosis annually. This disease can cause tremors, stiffness, and reduced hand dexterity, making tasks like buttoning or zipping clothing difficult.
CTE is a degenerative brain condition associated with repeated head traumas, often observed in contact sports like football, boxing, and hockey. Due to challenges in diagnosis and limited data, it’s difficult to determine the exact percentage of men affected by CTE in the United States. Factors such as under diagnosis, varied symptoms, and limited research contribute to this complexity.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 80,000 young adults aged 20 to 39 are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States.Post-Cancer Patients: Individuals recovering from cancer treatment and surgeries affecting mobility, may find adaptive clothing, including magnetic front flap underwear, helpful during their recovery and rehabilitation process.
Traditional adaptive wear is not known for being trendy or attractive. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. However, Designer Johnny Goodwin Jr. sees it differently. “Just because people get older, face disabilities or a combination of both, does not mean they should sacrifice style and comfort being in their own skin. Style breeds confidence and that is something everyone not only needs but deserves, especially when struggling with a disability at any age.”
The ethos of the company is “Reclaim independence with style. Empowering accessibility and fashion. Discover freedom with flair,” encapsulating the mission behind Easy Access Underwear. His brand isn’t just about creating functional garments; it’s about empowering individuals to express themselves confidently through fashion while embracing their unique needs.
At the heart of Johnny’s vision is the belief that everyone deserves access to clothing that not only meets their functional requirements but also reflects their personal style. Easy Access Underwear achieves this by seamlessly blending form and function, offering adaptive designs without compromising on aesthetics.
One of the standout features of Easy Access Underwear is its thoughtful design, which prioritizes accessibility without sacrificing style. The design makes it easy to open and close via a magnet for anyone with dexterity issues and the soon to launch new design will include discrete padding and removable padding to assist with leakage. Every aspect of the garments are meticulously crafted and being improved to enhance both functionality and fashion.
The impact of Johnny’s work has not gone unnoticed. Featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Easy Access Underwear has garnered attention for its innovative approach to inclusive fashion. Doctors in the Philadelphia region have recognized the value of Johnny’s creations, recommending them to their patients as a practical and stylish solution. Johnny has taken this opportunity to heart to improve the product based on doctor and patient feedback to better serve this community of individuals who will ultimately benefit from this product.
As Easy Access Underwear continues to grow, Johnny remains steadfast in his commitment to championing accessibility and style. Through ongoing innovation and collaboration, he aims to expand his brand’s reach, ensuring that individuals of all abilities have access to clothing that empowers and inspires.
In a world where fashion often prioritizes aesthetics over inclusivity, Johnny Goodwin Jr. and Easy Access Underwear are beacons of change. With a blend of creativity, empathy and determination, Johnny is redefining the boundaries of fashion, one adaptive design at a time.
